Worm & Bot Treatments
There are two very common methods of giving bot treatments, worming or deworming horses. The two types of worming methods are called Purging and Continious wormers.
Purge wormers kill parasites with a single strong dose, are given periodically. This wormer is usually administered every 8–12 weeks, depending on local conditions and veterinary recommendations.
Continuous wormers which are also known as known as daily wormers. These are given in the feed daily and in small doses. However, neither of these treatment methods are perfect. Purge wormers are effective for rapidly killing all parasites, but are gone from the horses body in just a couple of days. After a short period of time the horse may start to be reinfected. Continuous wormers are mild and a low dose solution and may be easier on the horse but may not be effective in quickly killing worms or bots in a heavily infected horse. Neither type will kill all types of worms or bots out there. Horses normally require a purge worming with a different drug on a rotating basis. |
