Snaffle Bits

There are many types of horse bits available. The snaffle bit is the most common type of horse bit used while riding.

The snaffle bit consists of a mouthpiece and a ring on either side. The snaffle bit acts with direct pressure. There is a popular misunderstanding in the difference between curb bits and snaffle bits. A snaffle is not necessarily a bit with a jointed mouthpiece as is often thought.  What makes a horse bit a snaffle is because it creates direct pressure on the mouth without leverage. It's a non-leverage bit, and does not increase pressure applied by the reins. It's a bit without a shank. Therefore, a single or double jointed mouthpiece, even though found in the most common found snaffle bits, does not automatically make a bit a snaffle.
