Saddle Stirrups

Stirrups are basically a ring with a flat bottom fixed on a leather strap. Stirrups are hung from each side of the saddle usually by an adjustable strap. This creates a footrest for the person riding the horse and aids in mounting.

There are many different style saddle stirrups to choose from but they all serve a general purpose which is to greatly increase the riders ability to stay in the saddle and to control the mount. It is also important that the stirrups be the correct width for the riders boot. A saddle stirrup that is too narrow will increase the chance that the riders boot will get caught. It is common suggestion that the stirrups be no more than 1 inch larger than the widest part of the riders boot.
