Reins are an item of horse tack used to direct or guide the horse while riding or driving. The reins can be made of many types of materials. The most commonly used are leather reins and nylon reins. Metal or other material can also be found in some types of reins. The reins attach to a bridle or headstall by its horse bit or noseband. There are several styles of reins. Some of the more commonly used are:

• Split reins - A western style riding rein where the reins are not attached to one another at the ends.
• Romal reins - A style from the vaquero tradition. This type incorporates a closed rein with a long quirt at the end.
   
• Mecate reins - A style of rein seen on bosals or hackamores. The reins are made from a single piece of rope that encompasses both a closed rein and a leading rope.
